What do you need to be a great date?
November 17, 2003 by Michael Smalley
We just celebrated our son’s, Cole, seventh birthday! He begged to have his party at the skate park, so we agreed knowing it was going to be chaos. . .and it was. There were 8 other birthdays going on at the same time!
Kids were running everywhere, but there was one special kid at my son’s birthday. Her name is Bernice
I couldn’t believe my ears the first time my son said the words, “I have a girlfriend.” He’s only in first grade, and he told me this only after his second day at school!
But Amy and I have taken this as a fun opportunity to start helping Cole understand how to treat someone he has “feelings” for, even if they are seven year old feelings. We’ve reminded him to honor Bernice, be patient, kind, understanding, all things a 7 year old has no idea what they mean
But never the less, we work with him on their meanings and what it looks like to be a Christ-like boy, especially toward a girl. We pray that by instilling these thoughts now, they will become second nature to Cole when he really starts dating.
